Now, here’s the thing: the charging speed of an EV charger doesn’t just depend on its kW rating. It also depends on the battery capacity of your vehicle. In general, the larger the battery capacity, the longer it will take to charge. This is because there’s more energy that needs to be transferred from the charger to the battery.

Let’s say you have a charger with a 50 kW rating. If you’re charging a vehicle with a small battery capacity, say 20 kWh, the charger can deliver a relatively large amount of power compared to the battery’s capacity. But as the battery gets closer to full, the charging rate slows down. This is a safety measure to prevent overheating and damage to the battery.

Level 2 chargers are more common in homes and public charging stations. They use a 240 – volt outlet and can have power outputs ranging from 3.3 kW to 19.2 kW. A Level 2 charger with a 7.2 kW output can charge a 20 kWh battery in about 3 – 4 hours. For a 100 kWh battery, it would take around 14 – 15 hours.

DC fast chargers are the fastest. They can have power outputs of 50 kW, 100 kW, 150 kW, or even higher. These chargers are usually found at highway rest stops and commercial charging stations. As I mentioned earlier, a 50 kW DC fast charger can charge a 20 kWh battery from 0 to 80% in 20 – 30 minutes, while a 100 kWh battery might take 1.5 – 2 hours to reach the same 80% charge.
